‘Tim’s Vermeer,’ ‘The Act of Killing’ and ‘Sound City’ Among 10 Satellite Nominees for Best Documentary

I’ll always have a soft spot for the Satellite Awards because they’re basically the Golden Globes only less recognized and they still honor documentaries. The latter is the bigger reason, of course. If you’re not familiar with these awards, they’re given annually by the International Press Academy, a group of entertainment journalists that broke off from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes givers). And they’ve just announced their nominees for 2013, including the ten titles in the Best Motion Picture, Documentary category.

With so many selections, the nominees include a few expected picks and some surprises, namely Evocateur. In addition to that category, the Satellites have one more doc nominee elsewhere. Waiting for Lighting is a contender in the Best Overall Blu-ray/DVD category with its release from First Run Features.
