Nominees for the 66th Primetime Emmys were announced this morning, and there are quite a few of our favorites listed among the nonfiction categories.
Jehane Noujain’s The Square, which was also nominated for an Academy Award this year, is up for Emmys in four categories, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming.
Competing against that film in a couple of those categories is one of our favorite miniseries of the year, the Neil deGrasse Tyson-hosted Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. It’s actually nominated in a whopping 13 categories, including those for Outstanding Short-Format Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, plus recognition for writing, directing, art direction, cinematography, editing, main title design, music score, main title theme music, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.
Other notable documentaries with nominations include Life According to Sam, Paycheck to Paycheck and Barbara Kopple’s Running From Crazy. Also, my reality series addiction, The Amazing Race, is once again up for Emmys in multiple categories.
Below is a complete but simplified list of nonfiction nominees via Deadline’s full list. For more specific details and for other nominations, go here.
