The 35th News and Documentary Emmy nominations were announced yesterday, and the current events journalism side heavily represents coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. The documentary half includes the airings of a number of favorite features from recent years, including The Imposter (A&E), Brooklyn Castle (PBS — POV), Special Flight (PBS — POV), Gideon’s Army (HBO), The Crash Reel (HBO), Casting By (HBO), Gasland Part II (HBO), Detropia (PBS — Independent Lens), Herman’s House (PBS — POV), Escape Fire (CNN), Beauty is Embarrassing (PBS — Independent Lens), Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer (HBO), Blackfish (CNN), Oscar nominee Chasing Ice (National Geographic) and Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (PBS — Independent Lens), which received two nominations — for long form documentary editing and for Outstanding Arts and Culture Programming.
The big honor of Best Documentary, though, went to Oscar nominee How to Survive a Plague (PBS — Independent Lens), which is also nominated for long-form editing, Oscar nominee The Invisible War (PBS — Independent Lens), which is also nominated for long-form investigative journalism, Valentine Road (HBO), which is also nominated for long-form coverage of a current news story, Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington (HBO), which is also nominated for Outstanding Arts and Culture Programming and The Central Park Five, which is also nominated for Outstanding Historical Programming.
As glad as I am to see those films honored, I must also give special recognition to the nomination of NPR’s Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt, which is up for the award for New Approaches: Documentary.
