‘Saving Face,’ ‘The Interrupters’ and ‘The Loving Story’ Among Winners at the 2013 News & Doc Emmys

The latest documentary to pull double duty and win both an Oscar and an Emmy is Saving Face. Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short last year, and it surprised me last night by being named Best Documentary at the 34th News & Documentary Emmy Awards, beating features Project Nim, The Loving Story and Nostalgia for Light as well as fellow short The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom. Saving Face also won the Emmy for documentary/long-form editing.

The Loving Story did pick up an award of its own, the Emmy for Outstanding Historical Programming — Long-Form. HBO Documentary Films, which received credit for the Saving Face and Loving Story wins, was also responsible for airing Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present, which won the Emmy for Arts and Culture, Vito, which won for Outstanding Research, and In Tahrir Square, which won for Outstanding Music & Sound.

Another notable winner is Steve James’s The Interrupters, which won the Outstanding Informational Programming Emmy via its Frontline airing. Frontline won a handful of awards, and CBS did very well, too, with numerous wins for CBS Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes.
