During a 2011 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, actress/comedienne Roseanne Barr announced that she would be running for President of the United States, upset with the current state of politics and Barack Obama in particular. After a year of few taking her seriously she ended up winning the nomination of the small Peace and Freedom Party, and after being put on the ballot in three states ended up with 65,000 votes.
If you’re wondering why or how this all happened, you’ll have your answer in documentary form. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday that Roseanne For President! is currently in post-production from director Eric Weinrib. The doc encompasses the entire process of Barr’s presidential bid from start to finish and, according to the filmmaker, will also poke fun at the nature of American politics while telling the story. Roseanne For President! will mark Weinrib’s feature-length debut in the director’s chair, having served as a producer and researcher for the Michael Moore-helmed docs Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko and Capitalism: A Love Story.
As someone who doesn’t follow politics or the exploits of Roseanne Barr I had no idea that this was even a thing that happened, but now that I know I’m very interested to see the story behind it. Roseanne For President! has no release date yet but is currently in post-production.
