If you loved Senna — and how could you not? — there’s another hot documentary about Formula One racing coming across the finish line very soon. It’s titled 1, and it’s made by acclaimed director/editor Paul Crowder (Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos; The Last Play at Shea) and his regular writer, Mark Monroe (who is best known for his WGA-winning work on The Cove). On top of that, for appeal to those not wooed by the familiar doc-making duo, the film features narration by actor Michael Fassbender.
1 delivers a history of the rise of the sport and features many of its most famous drivers, including Michael Schumacher, Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti and Niki Lauda, who is portrayed by Daniel Bruhl in Ron Howard’s new F1 movie, Rush. And its release appears to be timed to that Hollywood drama. Just a few days after Rush opens wide in the U.S., 1 will exclusively hit iTunes for one week, beginning October 1, before becoming available on all VOD platforms on October 11.
