‘Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures’ Trailer

Hot off its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures has a fresh new trailer ahead of its HBO premiere. The biographical documentary about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is the latest feature from Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, known for Party Monster (and its remake), The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Becoming Chaz and Inside Deep Throat.

According to IMDb, celebrity interviewees include Debbie Harry, Fran Lebowitz and Brooke Shields. Currently the synopsis seems to be simply “An examination of the life and work of the revered and controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe,” but here’s the slightly longer version sent out during the festival:

The only thing more outrageous than Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs was his life. Intimate revelations from family, friends and lovers are topped only by Mapplethorpe’s candor in a series of rediscovered interviews. This is the portrait of an artist who turned contemporary photography into a fine art, with a vision that created a culture war, still raging to this day.

Catch the film when it first airs on HBO on April 4th.
