It’s a great time for the recognition of this year’s best in nonfiction film and television. Tomorrow is the 2018 Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. The IDA recently revealed their nominees. And now the Cinema Eye Honors has completed their announcement of the contenders for their 12th annual awards.
Minding the Gap, already a huge force among all this season’s awards, leads the pack for the 2018 Cinema Eye Honors with a record-tying seven nominations. The film is up for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking as well as the awards for directing, editing, cinematography, score, first feature, and audience favorite. Director Bing Liu, who is the nominee in most of those categories, is also, as a character in his own film, was also named as one of this year’s “Unforgettables.”
Other big titles include Bisbee ’17, Shirkers, and Hale County This Morning, This Evening, each of which received five nominations, and Free Solo and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, each of which received nods in four categories, including the Audience Choice Prize. See all the nominees, including those previously revealed, below. The winners will be announced in a ceremony hosted by Steve James on January 10th.
